Tetanus - Treatment of Wounds
CAREFUL ATTENTION TO WOUND HYGIENE EFFECTIVELY ELIMINATES THE POSSIBILITY OF TETANUS INFECTION IN THE VAST MAJORITY OF PUNCTURE WOUNDS.
Puncture wounds can be made with nails, splinters, animal bites, even human bites! Also some burns where deeper layers of skin are injured.
Wash the wound under warm water.
- Encourage it to bleed. Clean out all dirt. Lift up any flaps of skin, and clean carefully. Use soap if the wound is not too deep and sore.
Cleanse with Hypercal® Ø (3-5 drops in water).
- Leave dressings undisturbed once applied. Freshly moisten externally with Hypercal® Ø and water. Only change if blood-stained or smelly.
- Tea tree oil is also very effective as an antiseptic.
Give homeopathic remedy Ledum 30c or 200c 3-4 times over 24 hrs after any puncture wound.
- Use especially where wound is pale, puffy, blue, feels cold, or is better for applying ice or cold water.
Follow Ledum 30c with Hypericum 30c 3-4 times over 24 hrs if the wound is accompanied by shooting pains, especially for injuries to fingers or toes.
Discharge of serum from a wound is part of the healing process.
- Freshly-formed blood vessels and cells are very delicate and easily damaged by excessively frequent changes of dressings.
If there is evidence of local infection (i.e., redness, heat, swelling or tenderness around the wound), take Hepar Sulph 6c three times a day until the symptoms start to reduce.
For septic wounds, consider using the remedies Pyrogen , Echinacea or Gunpowder .
Burns
In relation to tetanus, the anaerobic bacteria come into play as soon as tissues die. In cases involving burns:
-
Take the heat out of the burn. If possible, uncover the area and run under cold water. If it is difficult to uncover the area, run cold water on top of clothing.
-
A closed burn is sterile. It is not usual in such cases for a tetanus injection to be offered when attending Accident & Emergency. However, in more serious burn cases, an injection may be offered. Using food wrap or a polythene bag over the burn helps prevent loss of bodily fluids. Nevertheless, meticulous wound-cleansing and treatment with homeopathic remedies such as Causticum and Urtica will help in most cases.
-
A combination remedy of Thiosin , Calendula and Calc Fluor 6x twice a day helps to prevent scarring.
